Russia has reiterated its full support for China’s role as the host of the upcoming APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Shenzhen. This commitment was emphasized during a meeting between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Baku, Azerbaijan, where bilateral relations and multilateral cooperation were high on the agenda.
The dialogue between the two nations’ foreign ministers comes after productive meetings between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier in May and August, which have set the strategic direction for the ongoing comprehensive partnership between China and Russia. Wang Yi expressed confidence that with Russia’s backing, China’s APEC host year would yield positive outcomes by fostering regional cooperation, promoting economic development, and enhancing connectivity within the Asia-Pacific community.
Emphasizing the importance of multilateral cooperation, Wang Yi highlighted the role of organizations such as the United Nations and the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia as platforms for China and Russia to promote multilateralism and strengthen global governance. Lavrov echoed these sentiments, underscoring the development of China-Russia relations across various sectors and the alignment of interests between the two nations.
Lavrov affirmed Moscow’s readiness to collaborate with Beijing through international forums like the United Nations, G20, APEC, and BRICS. This pledge of support underscores the strategic coordination efforts between China and Russia to address global economic and political challenges.
The meeting also involved discussions on upcoming diplomatic engagements and regional and international issues, reflecting the persistent efforts of both countries to deepen their strategic partnership. The ongoing dialogue signals a commitment to working closely on shared global objectives.
