India has underscored the importance of maintaining peace and tranquillity along its border with China as a vital component for fostering stronger bilateral relations. This message was conveyed by National Security Adviser Ajit Doval during his meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing. The meeting represented the 25th round of discussions between the two nations’ special representatives, focusing on resolving their protracted boundary dispute. Key topics of discussion included advancing boundary delimitation, enhancing border management, and broadening cooperation across their shared frontier.
Both countries took the opportunity to positively assess the progress made in their bilateral relations. They deliberated on ways to sustain stability along the Line of Actual Control and reiterated their commitment to reaching a political settlement over the boundary issue, aligning with their long-term interests. This dialogue follows the advances achieved since the 2024 understanding between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, which aimed to de-escalate tensions in the Ladakh sector. Following this agreement, initiatives such as the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra and border trade through designated routes have resumed, alongside increased people-to-people exchanges.
Ajit Doval highlighted that bilateral ties have been gradually normalizing, attributing this progress to the sustained peace along the border. Meanwhile, China’s stance emphasized the importance of placing the boundary issue within the broader context of their overall relationship. Despite the productive dialogue, both sides refrained from disclosing significant details concerning the demarcation of the disputed boundary. However, they agreed to persist with negotiations, with the next round of special representative talks scheduled to take place in India in 2027.
The timing of these discussions is particularly noteworthy, as they precede the anticipated visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to India for the BRICS summit in September.
