In a significant diplomatic engagement, Chinese President Xi Jinping has advocated for a new security framework in the Middle East centered on cooperation, dialogue, and respect for national sovereignty. During his discussions with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in Cairo, Xi outlined a four-point strategy aimed at bolstering regional security cooperation, tackling interlinked conflicts, fostering economic development, and enhancing international coordination.
Xi emphasized the importance of regional countries assuming greater responsibility for their own security, while opposing interference from external powers. Highlighting the Palestinian issue as pivotal to resolving broader tensions in the Middle East, Xi stressed the need for a comprehensive approach. Furthermore, China expressed a willingness to collaborate with regional nations on safeguarding international shipping routes, promoting economic progress, and addressing root causes of conflict. Xi reiterated that the United Nations Charter and international law should serve as the foundation for addressing regional challenges.
The discussions also heavily focused on enhancing China-Egypt economic relations. Xi called for increased cooperation in several sectors, including infrastructure, energy, agriculture, communications, electric vehicles, green energy, aerospace, and the digital economy. Over the years, China has emerged as Egypt’s largest trading partner and leading source of imports, maintaining this status for 14 consecutive years. Bilateral trade between the two nations saw significant growth, rising from $10.21 billion in 2013 to $20.79 billion in 2025.
In a move to further solidify their partnership, the two countries signed over 20 cooperation agreements covering diverse areas such as artificial intelligence, trade, technology, education, transportation, and industrial supply chains. Additionally, they issued a joint statement aimed at reinforcing their comprehensive strategic partnership, demonstrating a shared commitment to advancing mutual interests and regional stability.
