The strengthening of Malaysia-China relations is set to have profound implications for trade and technology collaboration between the two nations. This development follows Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s arrival in Shanghai for a three-day working visit aimed at boosting ties and exploring emerging technologies, which could pave the way for increased foreign investment in Malaysia.

Anwar, who also serves as Malaysia’s finance minister, has a packed itinerary that includes high-level meetings and participation in international conferences. On Thursday, he is scheduled to meet with Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Hangzhou, a move that underscores the importance of bilateral dialogue in fostering economic cooperation. Prior to this, Anwar will engage with leaders in Shanghai, attending the WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 and delivering a keynote at the WorldSkills Conference.

The visit highlights Malaysia’s focus on digital trade and artificial intelligence, areas in which Anwar is expected to advocate for stronger international partnerships. At the Fifth Global Digital Trade Expo in Hangzhou, where Malaysia is among the Guest Countries of Honour, the prime minister will emphasize these themes. His engagements with Chinese business and tech leaders aim to attract more foreign investment into Malaysia, thereby enhancing the country’s economic prospects.

China has been Malaysia’s largest trading partner for 17 consecutive years, with bilateral trade reaching an impressive US$113.82 billion from January to August this year. This robust trade relationship is anticipated to expand further as Malaysia seeks to leverage its ties with China for mutual economic benefits.
