China has expanded its capabilities in ocean observation and environmental monitoring with the successful launch of the Haiyang-2E (HY-2E) marine satellite. The satellite was sent into orbit via a Long March 4B rocket, which took off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China at 7:46 a.m. Beijing time on Thursday. This mission signifies the 654th successful launch for the Long March rocket series, underscoring China’s commitment to advancing its space technology.
Developed by the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST), the HY-2E is the latest advancement in China’s Haiyang-2 series, a pioneering satellite network dedicated to monitoring marine conditions. This new satellite will replace the HY-2B, which was launched in 2018, and will work in tandem with the HY-2C and HY-2D satellites. Together, this constellation provides continuous and comprehensive data crucial for marine observation and forecasting services.
Equipped with four sophisticated microwave remote sensing instruments, the HY-2E satellite is designed to gather detailed data on sea surface conditions. It will monitor sea surface height, wave height, wind fields, and sea surface temperature, enhancing marine weather forecasting, climate studies, and research into significant oceanic phenomena like El Niño. The scientific community anticipates that this satellite will significantly improve the accuracy and reliability of ocean-related observations.
Over the past decade, the Haiyang-2 satellite program has proven invaluable in areas such as disaster prevention, maritime safety, and scientific research. These satellites have provided essential data for tracking typhoons, supporting tsunami early warning systems, and refining global numerical weather prediction models. Their contributions extend to marine resource management and national maritime security, playing a vital role in these domains.
Beyond weather and climate applications, the Haiyang-2 series offers practical benefits for the fishing and shipping industries. By providing data on ocean currents, winds, and waves, these satellites help identify productive fishing grounds, allowing vessels to operate more efficiently and reduce costs. Since HY-2B, the satellites have also featured an Automatic Identification System (AIS), facilitating continuous tracking of vessel positions, speeds, and identification details to bolster navigation safety across busy maritime routes.
