China marked a significant milestone in its space exploration efforts with the successful maiden flight of the Long March 12B carrier rocket. On Monday, the rocket launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, achieving its intended orbit and deploying the latest batch of the Spacesail Constellation communication satellites. This development underscores China’s growing capabilities in space technology.
The Long March 12B, standing at approximately 72 meters, is now the most powerful single-body rocket in China. Equipped with 10 engines fueled by liquid oxygen and kerosene, it generates around 800 metric tons of thrust at liftoff. This two-stage launch vehicle can transport payloads exceeding 20 tons into low-Earth orbit, representing a leap forward in China’s ability to support large-scale space missions.
The development process for the Long March 12B began in September 2024, integrating several cutting-edge technologies aimed at enhancing its performance and efficiency. These advancements include high-performance propulsion components, lightweight structural designs, advanced fuel management systems, and autonomous flight-control software capable of addressing in-flight anomalies. Engineers are now focusing on making the rocket’s first-stage booster reusable, with future tests planned to achieve this goal, potentially paving the way for a reusable version of the rocket in the coming years.
The successful deployment of the latest batch of satellites also advances the Spacesail Constellation, a project dedicated to establishing a low-Earth-orbit satellite network that provides high-speed global broadband internet services. With over 160 satellites already launched, the initiative aims to deploy a total of more than 10,000 satellites by 2030, significantly expanding global satellite internet coverage.
This achievement not only highlights China’s advancements in space technology but also underscores the country’s ambitions to expand its commercial space sector and enhance global communication infrastructure.
